Introduction to Forums

  • A forum is an area of your website where users can contribute to a discussion.
  • Contributing to a forum is called 'posting' and each contribution is called a post.
  • A new topic is called a Thread, replies to that topic are part of the thread.
  • Posts are stored in a Forum Module.
  • Forum modules are created and managed via the Configure tab.
  • A forum can be Moderated or Unmoderated.
  • In a Moderated Forum, the posts do not appear on the forum until they have been approved by the forum moderator (post - approve - display).
  • In an Unmoderated Forum, the posts appear on the forum immediately after they have been posted (post - display).
  • When you configure a Forum, you specify how many days a Thread is to remain Active. When they exceed this length of time they become Innactive and are no longer displayed.

 Publishing a Moderated Post

Postings to a moderated forum must be vetted by an administrator before they are allowed to be released to the public.

  1. Select Forums from the Manage Tab, then pick the Forum you want from the drop-down list.
  2. Select Active Threads, which is the default option from the down down list. The other option here is Innactive Threads, which you won't want to publish.
  3. Select Posts requiring moderation from under the Search label. This should be the default search option in a moderated forum.
  4. The unpublished posts will now be displayed. Check them carefully, and then click the Publish action alongside those postings which meet your moderation rules. Each time you click the Publish action you'll be asked to confirm the action - just in case you clicked the wrong one by mistake.
  5. The postiong will now be published, and removed from the list of posts requiring moderation.

Reset a User's Email Request

If a user has posted on a forum, and has chosen to receive an email whenever someone responds to the post, the user has no way of subsequently opting out from receiving these notification emails. The forum moderator can, on behalf of the user, switch off these notification emails using the 'reset users' email settings' feature as follows:

  1. Select Forums from the Manage Tab, then pick the Forum you want from the drop-down list.
  2. The Active Threads will be displayed by default. You can select Innactive Threads if you wish.

  4. When you find a posting you wish to reset, click the reset email on post to this thread action. You will be prompted to confirm the action
