10.2 release notes

10.2 introduces major improvements to the CMS in some key areas. The outline list follows with details on each of the changes further down

Federated logins - authenticating users against 3rd party identity providers (or their own Active directory).
Improvements to posts and forums - more post type field options, greater interaction and a richer API.
More reporting - reports on traffic, content, bandwidth and a much more comprehensive audit trail.
Script management - making your pages faster and better optimised.

In addition to these we've also had time to add date pickers to the form fields, improve our options for authentication customisation and add code support for Azure hosting. Several bugs were killed in the making of this release also.

Looking at those items in detail below:

Federated logins

Authentication is a hot topic at the moment, users are increasingly swamped under the volume of passwords they are required to remember. This release sees the addition of federated authentication to the methods of authentication available to users in the Sitekit CMS. Federated logins will allow users to authenticate through other 3rd party identification providers such as liveID and Yahoo with more to be added. If your Active directory is set up in a suitable way you can also authenticate against that.

New reports

We've added four new reports and vastly improved the systems audit trail

New reports are available for bandwidth, storage, content and traffic. They all go back further to give greater historical perspective and provide popups from which data can be filtered. Along with the reports are references to help pages where you can get advice on reducing your storage and bandwidth.
The audit trail has been improved both in the volume of what it records and can roll back from but also in the volume of asset it makes these records for. There's an improved interface to gain access to this, allowing filtering by asset, and user.
Azure code changes. Microsoft's Azure platform has very specific requirements when it comes to code and date formats. This release supports Azures needs meaning that as a customer you now have more hosting options, from shared, dedicated, premium, AWS and now Azure. This site is running on Azure.

Script management

Scripts are used increasingly on all modern sites, their use has exploded with the popularity of jQuery and responsive design. They are utilised for carousels, light boxes, date pickers, text effects, cookies setting and myriads of other things. It's a challenge for developers and editors to use scripts efficiently in the correct location in the code and also not to bloat their code with unnecessary or repeating scripts. They also need to be careful to manage script interdependencies as functionality is often provided by a combination of dependent files that need to be parsed in order.

The new script manager in 10.2 provides a central resource for managing all your sites scripts. It manages the dependencies and relationship and makes sure that wherever you call the script by its magic word it is rendered at the correct location in the pages URL. We've written an outline of what the manager does and also a guide to getting Scripts on your own site into a better optimised fashion.
