Ownerand Default User Groups

Sitekit 9.3 (and higher) includes a new special System User Group, called Owner.

Currently the Owner special User Group is only used by the new Resource Management module, where the person who creates a Booking is declared the Owner of that Booking. In future releases of Sitekit the concept of Ownership will be expanded into other areas.

You can see the current permission settings for Owner by going into the Asset Tree, selecting an Asset, and right-clicking on Permissions>>Edit Permissions.

Properties of the Owner System User Group

  • The Owner Group can be edited, but not deleted.
  • The Owner Group operates in a similar way to the All other User (Default) system User Group, which is used for Anonymous users. Site visitors are automatically treated as members of this Group.
  • The Owner Group does not show up on the list of User Groups, because the Owner of an item is automatically assigned membership of this Group – so members are added when needed.
  • If there is a conflict between a user's User Group permissions and their Owner permissions, the User Group Permissions have priority.

Notes on Booking Ownership

When a person creates a booking, their ID is stored as part of that specific booking, and from then on their rights to the bookings are those defined in the Owner User Group.

Why is this necessary?

Because it’s desirable that many people can create a booking – but once created you don’t want many people to be able to modify it - just the person who created the booking. Otherwise everyone could overwrite existing bookings, and the system would be useless.
